United States in China: The U.S. diplomatic mission in Beijing was established in 1862, originally as a legation. In June 1935, the legation changed status to an embassy. The embassy temporarily closed in December 1941 but reopened in March 1979. In addition to the United States' embassy in Beijing, the United States has five other representations in China. These representations include consulates in Chengdu, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang and Wuhan.
China in the United States: China has six representations in the United States. These representations include an embassy in Washington, D.C. and consulates in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco.
